Our major achievements are in two key areas:

The first has been to improve the lives and self-esteem of some of the most disadvantaged women and men and see them work themselves out of poverty through successful small enterpise activities.

• Since our inception in 1984 we have run more than 150 different projects, worked in over 30 countries and helped over 500,000 people to find ways of earning a living.
• Our partners and people we have supported continue to help others far into the future, so it is likely that more than 5 million people have benefited from our work so far.

The second is the development of the capacity of various southern organisations - including our project partners, local authorities and self-help groups - to be more effective in the way they respond to needs within their communities.

• We have supported some of our partners from their inception to become well respected sources of knowledge and experience for their country.
• Small trade associations have the confidence and skills to continue working with local authorities for a better environment for the traders.
