For vulnerable men and women, earning a living through their own efforts, helps to build self esteem and dignity. They can choose what to do with the income they generate.
People learn skills that will be with them throughout their lives, and pass their skills on to apprentices who are themselves often from very poor families.
Small enterprises supply goods and services to local communities. Goods supplied include dried foods in times of shortage, buckets for carrying water, clothing and tools for other businesses such as food processing or carpentry.
Some of these enterprises grow to supply larger businesses, contributing to the growth of local economies as inputs are supplied locally. A Kenyan making tomato puree was helped through management and marketing techniques to sell to a local supermarket, reducing the need for imported goods and vastly increasing his sales, the number of people he employed and the supplies he needed from poor farmers.
