The most vulnerable people in developing countries, such as those with disabilities or affected by HIV/AIDS, have even fewer options.
Formal employment is even less accessible - through the lack of local opportunities, mobility or widespread discrimination. They remain entirely reliant on any family they have, with little self esteem or hope of becoming more self-reliant.
APT projects have shown that they can break this vicious circle by acquiring skills in small enterprises, proving to themselves and to others that they can contribute to their local economies.
Asio Florence - Baker and retailer Asio lives in Soroti, Uganda with her disabled husband and two young children. Asio was helped to obtain training as ans apprentice in baking snacks, which she could sell in the market and which fitted with her child care needs. She cannot walk but through courage and determination she now sells her products around town, using her hand-driven tricycle as a mobile shop. Her daily turnover has risen to 30,000 UShs (£9) and she earns an income of 9,000 UShs (£3) a day from this. The impact on her life has been tremendous - she can now afford clothes for her children, exercise books for their schooling and medicines when they are sick. |
