It seems that almost every day we are shown scenes of devastation and heartbreak on our television screens and in the newspapers; enormous problems brought about by floods, drought, hurricanes and civil war. Once the rescue operations are over - what happens next?

As people return to their homelands to rebuild their lives, we work with them to get their local market economy operational again. This enables people to generate income and provide for their families once more. We also help to rebuild local services and self help groups so that communities are better able to respond to a future crisis.
| In the aftermath of a devastating conflict in Sierra Leone, relief agencies supplied tools and seeds to help those displaced begin farming again. APT, together with our partner MAPCO, was able to help local blacksmiths improve their skills, co-ordinate themselves, and produce the tools needed. This helped blacksmiths to rebuild their trade, rather than imports demolishing it, and to continue operating as peace stabilised and relief work stopped. |
